I drove my two youngest kids to school yesterday morning for their first day of classes. Their sad faces reminded me of how I used to feel about the start of school: generally queasy and thoroughly unhappy about my summer ending and my days being filled with lectures and quizzes and tests.
Things sure have changed. I now LOVE the first week of class. It is one of the best weeks of the year. I love catching up with 2Ls and 3Ls—hearing their internship stories or congratulating them on their job offers. I love meeting the 1Ls. I love their excitement, their nervousness, and their sense of purpose and vision.
Yes, I am behind on my emails again and my desk is cluttering up. The quiet of summer is over. But I would trade that quiet any day for an atrium filled with voices and energy and activity. Welcome back students!

Just wanted to say how evident it is that you're leading by example, because we 1Ls have been so warmly welcomed here. I expected at least in some small sense to feel some "newbie" treatment by the 2Ls and 3Ls, but they have been nothing but encouraging and respectful. Once again, I feel so privileged and proud to be a part of this institution!
I just wanted to let you know how much your message in the Law Chapel meant to me on Thursday. But even more than that, I have been blessed to see the sincerity in your words and actions to serve the Lord. I have seen that in all of my professors here, and that love for God has been what has made this place seem more like home than I had hoped. Thank you so much. I pray that God will grant you clarity of thought and show you the way to proceed with your dreams. God bless you! Be dangerous.
